A pilot, sometimes called a spacer, directly controls the operation of a vehicle while located in the same craft. A pilot is often assisted by a copilot, navigator, utility bot, weapons officer, or other crew members. The term "pilot" is applied across vehicles used on land or in water, air, and/or space.
On smaller ships, the words pilot and captain are interchangeable, but on larger vessels, the pilot or pilots are rarely the commanders of the ships.
